How Long Does It Take to Build a Custom Pool in North Georgia?

One of the first questions we hear from homeowners is, “How long does it actually take to build a pool?” It’s a fair question, especially if you’re trying to plan around a new home, an upcoming summer, or simply want to enjoy your backyard as soon as possible.

The honest answer is that most custom pools in North Georgia take approximately 4 to 8 months from the initial consultation to the first swim. Every project is different, and timelines depend on everything from design complexity and permitting to weather and material selections.

As a design-build company with a Georgia Residential General Contractor, Landscape Architect, and Real Estate Agent on our team, we manage the entire process from concept to completion. Because we handle every phase under one roof, our clients benefit from better communication, fewer delays, and a smoother overall experience.

Here’s what you can expect throughout the process.

Phase 1: Initial Consultation (1–2 Weeks)

Every great backyard begins with a conversation.

During our first meeting, we’ll discuss:

  • Your goals for the space
  • Your budget
  • How you plan to use the pool
  • Existing site conditions
  • Any long-term plans for your property

This is also the perfect time to think beyond the pool itself. Many homeowners are interested in creating an entire outdoor living space with patios, fire features, outdoor kitchens, retaining walls, landscaping, and lighting. Planning everything together almost always produces a better finished product.

We’ll visit your property, evaluate the terrain, discuss any challenges, and begin developing ideas that fit both your lifestyle and your investment.

Phase 2: Design & Planning (2–6 Weeks)

Once we understand your vision, we begin designing.

This stage often includes:

  • Pool layout and dimensions
  • Patio and hardscape design
  • Landscape planning
  • Drainage considerations
  • Equipment placement
  • Material selections
  • Optional features like spas, tanning ledges, waterfalls, or fire bowls

Because we also provide landscape architecture services, we aren’t simply designing a pool—we’re designing your entire backyard as one cohesive outdoor environment.

Some projects move through this phase quickly, while others take several revisions as homeowners fine-tune every detail.

Phase 3: Engineering, Permits & Approvals (2–6 Weeks)

Before construction begins, permits must be obtained and plans finalized.

Depending on the municipality and property location, this phase may include:

  • County or city permits
  • Engineering approvals
  • Site plans
  • Grading and drainage review
  • HOA approvals (if applicable)

Permit timelines vary throughout North Georgia, and this is one area that’s largely outside of any contractor’s control. Having complete, accurate plans submitted from the beginning helps minimize delays.

Phase 4: Construction Begins (8–16 Weeks)

Once permits are approved, construction can begin.

Although every project is unique, construction generally follows this sequence:

Excavation

The pool is carefully laid out and excavated according to the approved plans.

Steel Reinforcement

Rebar is installed to create the structural framework of the pool.

Plumbing & Electrical

Underground plumbing, electrical conduit, lighting, and equipment connections are installed before the shell is completed.

Shotcrete or Gunite

Concrete is pneumatically applied to create the structural shell of the pool. This is one of the biggest milestones in the project.

Tile, Coping & Stonework

Once the shell has properly cured, decorative finishes begin. Tile, coping, natural stone, or pavers start transforming the structure into the finished product.

Decking & Hardscapes

Patios, walkways, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and other outdoor living features are constructed.

Interior Finish

The plaster or pebble finish is applied to the interior of the pool.

Startup

The pool is filled with water, equipment is tested, chemistry is balanced, and you’ll receive instruction on operating your new pool.

What Can Extend the Timeline?

No contractor likes delays, but several factors can affect construction schedules.

Weather

North Georgia weather is unpredictable.

Heavy rain can make excavation impossible, slow concrete work, or delay grading and landscaping. Winter temperatures can also affect certain construction activities.

Material Availability

Premium tile, imported stone, specialty lighting, and custom features sometimes have longer lead times.

If you’ve selected unique finishes, ordering early helps keep the project on schedule.

Design Changes

One of the most common causes of delays is making changes after construction has already begun.

Adding a spa, changing patio materials, relocating equipment, or expanding the outdoor living area often requires redesign, additional materials, and scheduling adjustments.

Taking the time to finalize decisions during the design phase helps construction move much more efficiently.

Can a Pool Be Built Faster?

Sometimes.

Simple pool designs with readily available materials and favorable weather can move more quickly.

However, custom pools aren’t assembly-line products.

Rushing important phases like engineering, structural work, or finish installation is never worth sacrificing quality. A well-built pool should last for decades, making a few extra weeks during construction a worthwhile investment.

The Best Time to Start Planning

One of the biggest misconceptions is that homeowners should wait until spring to begin planning a pool.

In reality, the best time to start is often fall or winter.

Beginning the design process during the cooler months allows time for planning, permitting, and material selections before construction season becomes busiest. Many homeowners who start planning in winter are swimming by late spring or early summer.

If you wait until warm weather arrives, you’ll likely be joining everyone else who had the same idea.

Why Working With a Design-Build Team Matters

Building a custom pool involves much more than excavation and concrete.

It requires coordination between designers, contractors, engineers, landscape professionals, utility trades, inspectors, and suppliers.

When these responsibilities are split across multiple companies, communication gaps can develop, resulting in unnecessary delays and frustration.

Our integrated approach keeps the process organized from start to finish. With a Georgia Residential General Contractor, Landscape Architect, and Real Estate professional working together, we can help clients evaluate everything from site layout and drainage to future home additions, property value, and long-term investment.

Rather than focusing solely on the pool, we help homeowners create outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of their home.

Final Thoughts

Every custom pool is unique, but for most North Georgia homeowners, it’s reasonable to expect approximately four to eight months from the initial consultation to enjoying your first swim.

The key to staying on schedule is thoughtful planning, clear communication, and partnering with an experienced team that manages the process from beginning to end.
